AMANTIO 224 and DUTTIO 225: certified ESD protection

Both references have been tested and certified to the ESD requirement of EN 61340-5-1:2024. The new version is in stock and is identified by the ESD PROTECTION label.

Yellow ESD PROTECTION hang tag with the standard electrostatic discharge pictogram and the wording Electrostatic Discharge.

What ESD is and where it is required

As you walk, your body builds up an electrostatic charge. In an ordinary setting that means, at worst, an irritating spark when you touch a door handle. Inside an EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area) that same discharge can destroy a semiconductor junction without leaving any visible trace —the component passes quality control and fails months later in the field— or act as an ignition source in atmospheres containing solvents or combustible dust.

ESD footwear manages that circuit: it conducts the charge from the body to the dissipative floor continuously and at a controlled rate. Not so insulating that charge builds up, not so conductive that the wearer is effectively earthed.

It is the footwear required by ESD control programmes in:

  • Automotive
  • Microelectronics
  • Cleanrooms
  • Laboratories
  • Chemical industry
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Electrical components

Antistatic is not the same as ESD

All our safety footwear already met the antistatic (A) property of EN ISO 20345:2022. But that requirement allows a very wide electrical resistance window: four orders of magnitude. A shoe can be perfectly antistatic and still fall outside what an EPA permits.

The ESD requirement lowers that ceiling: the resistance of the complete footwear must stay below 108 Ω.

Antistatic (A) · EN ISO 20345:2022 ESD requirement · EN 61340-5-1:2024 Measured on refs. 224 and 225 6.4 – 9.8 × 10⁷ Ω ESD limit 10⁸ Ω 10⁵ Ω 10⁶ Ω 10⁷ Ω 10⁸ Ω 10⁹ Ω
Logarithmic scale of the electrical resistance of the complete footwear. The antistatic window of EN ISO 20345:2022 spans four decades; the ESD requirement removes the last one. All three test measurements fall below the limit.

How to identify the ESD version

Standard electrostatic discharge pictogram: a black triangle containing a hand, inside an arc, on a yellow background.

Look for the yellow tag and the pictogram on the heel

Certified units carry the ESD PROTECTION hang tag and the standard electrostatic discharge pictogram printed on the heel counter. If a unit carries neither mark, it is from the original version (not ESD).

Both versions in circulation

If you need ESD, state it on your order

The new ESD version is already in stock. For a transitional period, and until stock of the original version runs out, both versions will be on the market: the original without ESD marking and the new one with ESD marking.

Both are fully compliant with EN ISO 20345:2022. The only difference is the ESD certification.

→ Add “ESD” to the order line for references 224 or 225 and we will supply units of the certified version only.

If the order does not carry that note, either version may be supplied.

Upcoming

We will publish here every technical improvement we bring to the catalogue, with its date and its test. If you would like to be notified when one affects the references you buy, tell your sales contact.
